Getting started

Where does TaskCanyon live after I open it?

In the menu bar at the top right of your screen: look for the checkmark icon. After launch the Dock icon goes away, because TaskCanyon is a menu bar app. You can also press ⌥⌘T from any app to open it.

On a MacBook with a notch, a crowded menu bar can hide some icons. If you can't see it, use ⌥⌘T, or hold ⌘ and drag the icon further right.

Can I keep TaskCanyon in the Dock?

Yes. While its icon shows in the Dock right after launch, right-click it and choose Options → Keep in Dock, or drag TaskCanyon from Applications into the Dock. Clicking that icon opens your task list.

How do I start it automatically?

Open Preferences (⌘, while the list is open) and turn on Launch at Login. TaskCanyon then starts quietly in the menu bar each time you log in.

Which Macs does it run on?

Any Mac with macOS 14 Sonoma or later, Apple silicon or Intel.

Using TaskCanyon

How do I change the global shortcut?

Preferences → General → Shortcut. Click the shortcut box and press the new combination; it needs ⌘, ⌥ or ⌃. The ✕ button turns the shortcut off and ↺ resets it to ⌥⌘T.

What can I type in quick add?

A trailing ! stars the task (free). With Pro, TaskCanyon also understands days (today, tomorrow, friday, next week, oct 12, in 3 days), times (3pm, at 5, 17:30, noon, tonight) and lists (#work, which creates the list if it's new). Chips under the field show what it understood before you press Return.

What are the keyboard shortcuts?

↑ ↓ move between tasks, Space ticks off, ↩ edits, ⌫ deletes, ⌘Z undoes a delete, ⌘S stars and Esc returns to the add field. With Pro, ⌘D sets a due date and ← → or ⌘1–⌘9 switch lists. They're all listed in Preferences → Shortcuts.

I deleted a task by mistake. Can I get it back?

Yes: click Undo in the bar that appears, or press ⌘Z, within a few seconds of deleting. This also works for Clear Completed.

Can I make the list less see-through?

Preferences → General → Appearance has a Solid ↔ Glass slider. It works in both light and dark mode. If Reduce Transparency is on in System Settings, TaskCanyon is always solid.

Free and Pro

What's free, and what does Pro add?

Free: the menu bar list, the global shortcut, stars, undo, keyboard control, sound and appearance settings.

Pro adds due dates and reminders, overdue highlighting with a dot on the menu bar icon, lists, smart quick add for dates and lists, and iCloud sync.

How much is Pro, and is it a subscription?

Pro is a one-time in-app purchase of $4.99 in the US (prices vary by region). There's no subscription.

How do I buy or restore Pro?

Open Preferences → Pro and click Unlock Pro, or click Upgrade to Pro… at the bottom of the list. On another Mac signed in with the same Apple Account, use Restore Purchases on the same tab.

Can I get a refund?

Purchases are handled by Apple, so refunds are too. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com.

iCloud sync

How do I turn on sync?

Preferences → General → Sync with iCloud (Pro). Turn it on on each Mac you want in sync; they all need to be signed in to the same iCloud account. The line under the switch shows the status.

What syncs, and what doesn't?

Tasks, lists, stars, due dates and completed tasks sync. Settings that belong to each Mac don't: the global shortcut, sound, launch at login, appearance and the default reminder time.

Does it sync with iPhone or iPad?

Not today; TaskCanyon is a Mac app. An iPhone companion may come later if there's demand.

What happens to my tasks when I turn sync on for the first time?

They merge with the tasks already in iCloud. Nothing is replaced, and lists with the same name, like the starter Work list, are combined into one.

Troubleshooting

The shortcut doesn't open TaskCanyon.

Another app may already use that combination; Preferences shows “In use by another app” if so. Choose a different shortcut, or press ↺ to go back to ⌥⌘T.

I don't get reminders.

Check System Settings → Notifications → TaskCanyon and make sure notifications are allowed. Preferences → General → Reminders shows the current permission and links straight there. Tasks with a date but no time remind at the time set under Remind Me At (9:00 AM by default).

Sync says “Sign in to iCloud”, or changes don't show up.

Make sure each Mac is signed in to the same Apple Account in System Settings, that Pro is unlocked and Sync with iCloud is on there. Changes usually arrive within seconds; opening the list fetches them straight away.

Privacy

Do you collect any data?

No. TaskCanyon has no accounts, analytics, ads or third-party services, and we don't run servers that see your tasks. Read the full privacy policy.

Can you see my synced tasks?

No. Sync uses your private iCloud database, which belongs to your Apple Account. The developer has no access to it.
